In this current complexity in an era of globalization, individuals’ livelihood is no longer controlled only by their immediate society but also influenced by the changes in the wider world. Comparing to the past, the interconnection and interrelationship between the unknown others have grown dramatically, interfere to various dimensions such as political constitutions, employees ‘rights and corporate responsibilities, global human rights’ protection. Under such huge transformation, there is the urgent necessary to impulse human capabilities – those who completely aware of the diverse situations happening in the world; able to response critically and ethnically to a particular event as well as demonstrate a deep understanding towards other groups who come from different social-economic and religious backgrounds.. Therefore, in this changing globalized world, the sense of responsibility towards contributing to the betterment of both local and international community should be shared and acknowledged by all individuals.
WHAT ARE THE NECESSARY QUALITIES FOR INDIVIDUALS IN NOWADAYS WORLD?
The model of “Knowledge and Understanding, Skills, Attitudes” preferred as the three areas of assessments for the global competency, which outlined by OECD (2016) is considered one of the most valuable and up-to-date framework to rely on.
The awareness and understanding in related to global issues as well as multinational perspectives are what referred in the “Knowledge and Understanding” dimension.
The following “Skills” dimension requires a more complex attribution from individuals, includes both cognitive skills and behavior skills. A wide range of elements such as effective communication, adaptability, critical thinking, and the ability to live and work in multicultural environment are highlighted as key preferences.
On top of that, the uttermost component that most of educational strategies usually dissemble or still find it hardly to bring into practices is the “Right Attitude”. The openness to new cultures, the respect to diversity, the global-mindedness and the sense of responsibility are the set of manners required for every global citizen.
YOUTH TRAINING ACTIVITIES FOR ACTIVE GLOBAL CITIZENSHIP
Towards creating active global citizen in 21st century, young people should be equipped with sufficient knowledge and skills regarding global issues, intercultural perspectives as well as developed the right attitude in human sensibility. This will not only prepare for youths the ability to address work-life challenges but also educate them the mindset of becoming a proactive member in this global community.
In order to enhancing youth capabilities in this new century, STEP will organize “Youth Training” activities with various topics with the aims to promote personal development and increase social awareness for young people at both local and global level. These training activities are considered as an add-on value for individuals with non-formal learning approaches and are expected to help in improving necessary skill-sets and promoting right attitudes aside from what are taught in the formal classroom.
STRUCTURES AND METHODS
These training workshops will be conducted in a monthly basic. The contents will be designed based on learner-centered mechanism whereas participants will be actively involved in the topics through interactive activities, discussion, group works, debates, etc. Our facilitators are also experience youth trainers who participated in different national and international youth events.
